He now works as a fire safety officer and, as well as being actively involved in the local community, is an active mountain walker. In 2007 Bernard stood as a general election candidate in the South Tipperary constituency.
For the local elections Bernard is a candidate for the Clonmel borough (town council) election, and also in the Clonmel area for the South Tipperary County Council election.
Bernard is full of ideas and, and has pledged to work on the following policy platform:
1. Bring a national training facility for public utilities to the Ballingarrane Technology Park.
2. Develop a planning strategy to counteract the haemorrhaging of retail enterprise from the town's core and help deliver a centrally located multi storey car park for Clonmel.
3. Transform Clonmel and its environs into an eco tourism destination, with the river Suir as a natural focus.
4. Undertake a programme of cycleways and marked junction crossings to make town and country user friendly for pedestrians and cyclists.
5. Provide a live web-linked source of information in key visitor areas with updates on events for tourists and locals alike.
6. Enable the Clonmel retailers to issue parking tokens to their customers which would work through the meters giving shoppers a certain period to park without charge.
7. Progress an industrial heritage museum for Clonmel and surroundings covering brewing, milling, coach building and other traditional skills as a major regional attraction.
